Barely a week since the Philippine election took place, a lot of Filipinos still have some “election feels” and many are still emotional with the partial results. Some are sad and heartbroken. Some are celebrating. Some have lots of stories to tell. Some keep their feelings to themselves. While others take things way more serious and make decisions based on what they stand for—decisions that have been sparking conversations and debates online.

One of the stories that have been circulating for quite a while now is the viral story of how a supporter of presidentiable Leni Robredo chose to end her romantic relationship with a man who voted for presidential candidate Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos, Jr. or BBM last election.

On Facebook, the man uploaded screenshots of their Messenger conversations and express sadness on the fact that she chose to let him go because of their differences when it comes to politics. He said he finds it hard to accept that she chose her candidate over him after all the things they have been through.

“Hindi ko lang sinunod ‘yong gusto n’ya na dapat Leni din daw ako, heto umabot kami sa ganito na mas pinili nya ‘yong politics at mga paniniwala n’ya kaysa sa pinagsamahan namin [My mistake was not voting for her candidate, Leni. Now, she has chosen politics and her beliefs over our relationship],” he explained.

In the screenshots, it can be seen how she stood firm on her decision to break up with a man who supports a candidate she despises.

“Wala naman akong paki kahit na dahil sa election kung bakit tayo nag-break. I stood up for what is right. You did not. We are not the same [I don’t care if we broke up because of this election. I stood up for what is right. You did not. We are not the same],” she maintained.

The man tried to win her back; saying how he values everything they went through. But she refused to let him in again; saying that Marcos supporters do not have a place in her life.

The post, which was created a day after the polls, continues to make rounds online, generating discussions on social media. Some agree with the girlfriend’s stand on how political beliefs reflect a person’s point of view in life, while others think it’s too shallow and immature to let politics ruin relationships and connections.

How about you? What are your thoughts on this? What if you and your partner have contrasting political beliefs? Will you embrace this reality and just move forward as a couple? Will you try to change your partner’s mind?

Or will you walk away, too?
