Fans of the hit 1990s American television sitcom Friends got their hearts broken following the confirmation of Matthew Perry’s demise due to apparent drowning at his Pacific Palisades home on Saturday, October 28.

In a statement, NBC, which aired the series for all 10 seasons of Friends, expressed grief over the passing of one of the show’s lead roles.

“We are incredibly saddened by the too-soon passing of Matthew Perry. He brought so much joy to hundreds of millions of people around the world with his pitch-perfect comedic timing and wry wit. His legacy will live on through countless generations,” it wrote.

Perry captured a lot of hearts in the sitcom, which originally aired from 1994 to 2004, by playing the role of Chandler Bing; a character known for his unique blend of humor and vulnerability.

On different social media platforms, fans and fellow celebrites expressed sadness and posted messages of love as they celebrated Perry’s life.

According to NBC News, Los Angeles Fire Department (LAPD) spokesperson Brian Humphrey said first responders went to Perry’s home following a 911 call at 4:07 p.m. about a “water emergency” of an unknown type. No one was taken to a hospital, he said.

Later, the LAPD’s Robbery-Homicide Division, which probes high-profile crimes and cases involving celebrities, also arrived.

The cause of death has yet to be revealed, as of writing.
