Former Marikina mayor Bayani Fernando, the engineer-turned-public servant who led the Shoe Capital of the Philippines‘ transformation from a municipality to a city, fell to his death on Friday, September 22, while doing a roof repair on his house.

His wife, Maria Lourdes “MCF” Carlos-Fernando, who was also a former Marikina mayor, confirmed his demise through a statement, disclosing as well that funeral services for the late politician will be held at the Queen of Angels Chapel, Riverbanks, Marikina City.

The Marikina City Public Information Office (Marikina PIO) and Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) also released separate statements about his passing.

“The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority is deeply saddened and shocked about the sudden demise of former Chairman Bayani F. Fernando who served the Authority from June 5, 2002 until November 25, 2009. A mechanical engineer by profession, Chairman Fernando used scientific and practical approaches in his quest to solve the problems of Metro Manila,” the MMDA said.

“Under his helm, he put the MMDA in the spotlight. He was the person behind rapid bus lanes and the Metro Gwapo campaign transforming the region into a livable metropolis,” it added.

While his family, friends, and supporters celebrated his life as they look back on his accomplishments and wins as a public servant and a person.
